What is Email ROI?

Calculation Formulas

Opens

Opens = Emails Sent × Open Rate

Example: 10,000 emails × 25% = 2,500 opens

Clicks

Clicks = Opens × CTR

Example: 2,500 opens × 10% = 250 clicks

Conversions

Conversions = Clicks × Conversion Rate

Example: 250 clicks × 5% = 12 conversions

Total Revenue (Two Calculation Methods)

Total Revenue = Conversions × Avg Order Value (e-commerce model)
OR Total Revenue = Conversions × Estimated Lead Value (lead model)

Example: 12 conversions × $1,500 = $18,000
OR: 20 leads × $500 = $10,000

ROI

ROI = [(Total Revenue − Total Cost) ÷ Total Cost] × 100%

Example: [($18,000 − $5,000) ÷ $5,000] × 100% = +260%

Usage Scenarios

Scenario 1: Complete Data Evaluation

If you've already executed email marketing campaign and have actual opens, clicks, conversions and revenue, can directly input these data to quickly calculate actual ROI.

Scenario 2: Pre-Campaign Estimation

If planning email marketing campaign, can input estimated send count, open rate, CTR, conversion rate and avg order value to calculate expected ROI and determine if meets target.

Scenario 3: Partial Data Back-Calculation

If you only have partial data (e.g., only know opens and total revenue), can fill known fields, system will calculate ROI as much as possible based on available data.

Scenario 4: Optimize Metrics to Find Bottlenecks

By adjusting open rate, CTR, conversion rate parameters, can simulate different optimization strategies' ROI impact, identify most worthwhile improvement areas.

Scenario 5: Pure Lead Collection (B2B / Lead Nurturing)

If your email marketing purpose is lead collection (registration, consultation, download, etc.) without immediate transaction revenue, can fill "estimated lead value" to calculate ROI. Or only fill basic data, system will display funnel metrics and CPL (cost per lead), helping evaluate lead acquisition efficiency.

Frequently Asked Questions

If I only know total revenue and total cost, can I calculate ROI directly?

Yes! Just fill "Emails Sent," "Total Revenue" and "Total Email Cost," system can calculate ROI. Other fields (like open rate, clicks, etc.) can be left blank, won't affect ROI calculation results.

Why does system ask me to fill open rate when I already filled opens?

These two fields are mutually exclusive. If you fill "open rate," system automatically calculates opens; if you fill "actual opens," system prioritizes using actual data. If both filled, system uses "actual opens."

What's the difference between Email ROI and ROAS?

ROAS (return on ad spend) usually for paid advertising, calculated as "revenue ÷ ad cost"; ROI is broader investment return, calculated as "(revenue − cost) ÷ cost." Email ROI can be viewed as email marketing campaign investment return.

What is a good Email ROI?

Email marketing ROI varies by industry, target audience and product, generally ROI > 100% means profitable; ROI > 300% is good performance. E-commerce industry email ROI averages 200%~400%.
